Dealing with Love Across Cultures - A Valentine's Day Column

Dear Faizal: I’m a Christian Caucasian male, happily married, for the most part, to a Hindu Indian woman. We’ve been in a cross-cultural relationship for five years now, and we reside in Toronto. My wife is a wonderful partner — she’s supportive, loving and has really tried hard to integrate into Canadian culture. Lately, however, she’s become irritable, emotionally distant and pensive. She wasn’t “present” when we celebrated Christmas with my parents (her family lives in Delhi). For Christmas I bought her jewelry, clothes and other trinkets, but she didn’t seem interested. Now that Valentine’s Day is almost here, I want to buy the woman I love something big to make her feel special. Any suggestions? — From Husband in love
